Especially in the case of a frozen and unresponsive iPad app, knowing how to reboot and restart can be quite useful, and you may already be quite familiar with half of the process if you just read our tutorial on turning off your iPad. In this tutorial, we will show you both how to turn off the iPad and then restart it. If you are working inside an app that lets you create data, like the Pages text editor for iPad, make sure to save all your files and settings, and exit the apps you have opened - nothing should normally happen if you reboot your iPad without closing apps, but it is a good practice to follow, just to be on the safe side.
Unlike a "regular" desktop computer or laptop, your iPad doesn't include (yet) a dedicated "restart" or "reboot" command, so we have to manually execute the same command in two steps, namely by turning off the iPad, and then manually turning it back on.
When your iPad is running, press and keep held down at the same time both the Home button and the Sleep button, just like this:
Within a few seconds, a redirect button slider will appear on screen: "Slide to power off". Slide the button to the right, and your iPad will turn off completely (you may see a spinning wheel indicating some activity, and then the display will go completely blank - this is when you know that your iPad is completely powered off and has successfully shut down).
Now it has shut down, let's restart your iPad: press the exact same two buttons at the same time for about three seconds, and you will see the Apple logo float on screen. Less than five seconds later, you should see your Home screen background wallpaper, and you are ready to go: your iPad has restarted, just move the "slide to unlock" button at the bottom of the screen and optionally enter your passcode if you have added a password to your iPad and passcode protection.
...And this is all it takes to reboot and restart an iPad from a turned off state; all you have to remember is to press down and hold the same two buttons whether you want to turn off the iPad or turn it back on!
